Leading change is a complex task, but the need for skills in this area is unquestionable in today’s business, health care and academic arenas.  Change is one of the few certainties out there.  Successful implementation of change requires clear analysis of the issue(s) at hand, strategic planning for communication and implementation of change, and a plan for assessing the impact of change on an ongoing basis.

Things to remember about leading change:

  1. Those at the top must be willing to change themselves.  It’s rarely about the change needed at the grassroots level first.  Change begins at the top.
  2. Change is inherently a people issue.  It requires significant investment of time, energy and other resources for an organization to decide how proposed or impending change will impact people.  Failure to make this investment often results in change failures.
  3. Rapid-cycle change is emotionally draining for all involved.
  4. Communication is a critical strategy, and communication begins with listening at the top, not with talking.
  5. It’s worth the time to debrief the change process at multiple checkpoints along the way
Use these tips to assess your readiness to lead change in your organization.

Here are some resources that may be useful as you plan for leading change in your organization.
