Many of you will know what a “meme” is – defined on Wikipedia as “A meme (

Internet Meme Online Culture as a Social Trend

/ˈmm/meem)[1] is “an idea, behavior or style that spreads from person to person within a culture.”[2] A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena.”

The blog post on Health Affairs  by Gregg Bloche addresses the loss of the meme of compassion in our discourse about health care in this country.  He laments its loss and does a fine job of explaining the meme of “free-riding” and of “takers and makers” that derives from the Ayn Rand view of society.  He points out in this article that this shift in our language, away from compassion and toward something harsher and more grounded in a “survival of the fittest” mentality may cost us significantly as we frame the next several years of societal challenges on health care.  I highly recommend the article.
