kramer viera book coverAnthony Viera and Rob Kramer have edited the best leadership book for medical faculty that I have seen.

Management and Leadership Skills for Medical Faculty is that book.  It has become a wonderful “go-to” resource for my work in helping medical faculty develop leadership skills, institutional awareness, political acumen, and basic managerial skills. The book has four main sections, aptly titled “Tools of the Trade,” “Management,” “Leadership” and “Career Advancement.”  Using these topic areas as a framework, the book does a tremendous job delineating between managerial skills and leadership skills.  It also helps faculty members understand the transition from “subject matter expert” as a physician and/or scientist through the continuum from management to leadership.

Highlighting chapter authors from a wide range of leaders, coaches and experts on faculty leadership, this book is timely and very much needed.

The book contains good tools for understanding the difference between management and leadership skill sets, and how to navigate complex organizations.  The section on career advancement includes key topics such as political savvy and moral courage – it’s wonderful to see professionals in this sector speaking of moral courage.  The career section describes faculty roles and the transition from subject matter expert (physician healer) to physician leader.  They are two very different roles, and the transition is not an easy one to traverse.

It is particularly refreshing to see experts in this field speak of such skills as moral courage in the development of leadership that will transform academic health systems. The section on career management is particularly well done, containing tips for skill development and career advancement that are not frequently discussed but are critical elements for leadership career success.

I have been using this book for approximately six months with my clients and learners. I highly recommend it for  anyone who aspires to a career as a leader in academic medicine.
